New VLTs Will Limit Gambling

MANITOBA -- As reported by the Winnepeg Sun: ``Gamblers in Manitoba will soon be limited to playing a video lottery terminal for two hours before being forced to cash out. Lotteries Minister Scott Smith said yesterday timers will be built into the province's new fleet of VLTs -- the kind found in bars and lounges -- to help curb rates of problem gambling.

```No other province has the responsible gaming policies we have,' Lotteries Minister Scott Smith said yesterday, where he outlined his plan to replace the province's aging VLTs with state-of-the-art machines.

``...Smith said Manitoba has signed a $75-million contract with a Nevada-based company to provide 5,375 new VLTs featuring all the latest bells and whistles. The machines will begin arriving over the summer months, Smith said.

``The towers will be loaded with 'responsible gaming software,' which will prevent gamblers from placing more than $60 at a time into the machines and limit play to a maximum of two hours. At that time there will be an automatic cash out.

``...Scrolling responsible gaming messages will be displayed on-screen, including the phone number for the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba help line. Credits will also be shown in real dollars..."
